When I was four, playing in my drive way, some kids jumped out at me from our tall grass on our front lawn. Lauren was 8, Lanning was 6 and Maela was 3 1/2. I spent my days and early evenings with them until I was 11. We went through a lot together and both our families delt with angry-yelling fathers and passive aggressive mothers. The two women grew to be close friends as well. I never had any brothers or sisters growing up and I truly felt like they were family. Throughout my childhood I referred to them as 'My friends', as if it was a name, not a label, and my parents always knew who I was talking about. Even though none of us hung out at school together, we spent our afternoons and weekends together running a muck on the street, at my house, or at their home.
